Preoperative Onyx Embolization of Glomus Jugulare Tumor Complicated by Surgical Displacement of Embolic Material: Case Report
نویسندگان
چکیده
Onyx Liquid Embolic System (LES) embolization of highly vascular lesions is becoming more frequently used as an adjuvant therapy prior to surgical resection. The authors present a case of a successful pre-operative embolization of a glomus jugulare tumor using Onyx LES. The patient returned for scheduled operative resection one week later. Immediately following the surgery, the patient experienced new onset left hemiplegia. Full radiological workup revealed a fragment of Onyx LES occluding the middle cerebral artery (MCA). All indications are that the fragment became dislodged during the operation. To our knowledge, there have been no other reported cases where complications of tumor embolization with Onyx LES occurred during surgical resection.

Combined preoperative onyx embolization and protective internal carotid artery covered stent placement for treatment of glomus vagale tumor: review of literature and illustrative case.
OBJECTIVE Surgical resection of complex glomus vagale tumors can be complicated by extensive blood loss and might require surgical sacrifice of an encased internal carotid artery. METHODS A young patient presented with mass effect from glomus valage tumor. Computerized tomography angiography showed an encased internal carotid artery. Cerebral angiography demonstrated a highly vascular tumor....
متن کاملDirect Tumor Embolization of Sinonasal Unclassified Spindle Cell Sarcoma with Onyx
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the use of a new tumor embolization agent, Onyx (Covidien, Dublin, Ireland), for the use of intraoperative embolization of a sinonasal unclassified spindle cell sarcoma. METHODS A 45-year-old female patient presented to the rhinology clinic with a nasal mass. A biopsy revealed a highly vascular mass consistent with a sinonasal unclassified spindle cell sarcoma. Secondar...
متن کاملPercutaneous embolization of carotid paragangliomas using solely Onyx.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Paragangliomas are highly vascularized usually benign neoplasms arising from nerve tissue. Endovascular preoperative embolization is used to facilitate surgery but is often not complete, due to tiny feeding arteries not feasible for selective catheterization. Our purpose was to evaluate angiographic and clinical outcome using Onyx for percutaneous glomus tumor embolizatio...
متن کاملAdvantages of using a detachable-tip microcatheter and liquid embolic agents in the preoperative embolization of a recurrent cerebellar hemangioblastoma: A case report
BACKGROUND The preferred treatment for intracranial hemangioblastomas is surgical resection with or without preoperative embolization, however, embolization remains controversial due to risks such as distal tip entrapment, vascular injury during navigation, and embolic agent migration. CASE DESCRIPTION A 54-year-old woman was admitted for surgical resection and preoperative embolization of a ...
متن کاملPreliminary experience with the percutaneous embolization of juvenile angiofibromas using only ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (Onyx) for preoperative devascularization prior to surgical resection.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Juvenile angiofibromas are hypervascular tumors that may benefit from preoperative devascularization to reduce intraoperative blood loss. Our purpose was to evaluate the extent of angiographic devascularization and intraoperative blood loss by using only Onyx for percutaneous juvenile angiofibroma tumor embolization. MATERIALS AND METHODS We reviewed the clinical record...
